Appointment

Tate Commerce CEO Carmel Allen, who leads the trading arm’s business, has been appointed Tateis the new CEO. Allen will assume the role on September 1, 2022. Allen has been CEO of Tate Commerce since 2018, leading the organization’s publishing, retail, product development, image and licensing businesses.

Artist Céline Condorelli has been announced as the third annual artist-in-residence at National Gallery. The Franco-Italian artist, who now lives and works in London, has been nominated as part of the Gallery’s new Modern and Contemporary programme. Condorelli follows artists Rosalind Nashashiband Ali Cherri who served in 2019 and 2021 respectively.

National Gallery announces 2023 Artist in Residence

Alistair Brown, currently Head of Policy at the Museums Association, has announced a new role as Head of Museums, Libraries and Archives Policy at the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Brown made the announcement on Twitter and said: “I can’t wait to get started and deliver for museums, libraries and archives across the UK.”

Emalee Beddoes-Davis, currently Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at Birmingham Museums Trustannounced a new role as Curator of Visual Arts at The Cheltenham Trust. Making the announcement on Twitter, Beddoes-Davis said: “I learned so much from the people I met and the amazing artists I worked with in Birmingham. One of those things is the importance of belonging and community.

To celebrate the 1900th anniversary of Hadrian’s Wall, English heritage installed a new light vision at a site in the wall, the now lost Roman gatehouse at Housesteads Roman Fort.

Exhibitions

Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) has announced the first UK museum exhibition of works by North American artist Daniel Arsham. Six of Arsham’s bronze sculptures will be displayed outdoors in the 18th century formal garden at YSP, which form Arsham’s account of the ancient marble statue of Aphrodite from the 1st century BCE. From October 1, 2022.

A reinterpreted portrait of slave owner Sir Thomas Picton has been put back on display at Cardiff National Museumalongside two new commissions from artists who hope to reframe the Welsh officer’s legacy in the British Army.

A new exhibition commissioned by the BBC, by environmental analyst Roger Harrabin and artist Simon Bingle, has opened at Eden Project in Cornwall.

This autumn Tate Modern will feature the first major UK exhibition of the work of Maria Bartuszová (1936-1996), an artist who defined the world of sculpture in her own terms using innovative methods of plaster casting. From September 20, 2022 to April 16, 2023.

In the first of a new series of ‘Discover’ exhibitions to be held in the national gallery‘s Sunley Room, ‘Discover Manet & Eva Gonzalès’ opens this fall. This will be the first British exhibition designed around the portrait of Eva Gonzalès (1870) by Édouard Manet. ‘Discover Manet & Eva Gonzalès’ runs from October 21, 2022 to January 15, 2023.

A new exhibition funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) takes a unique look at industrial-era Britain through the lens of Leeds and surrounding regions. “Living with Machines: Human Stories of the Industrial Age” draws on a major research program of the same name, which aims to examine the human impact of the Industrial Revolution. The exhibition takes place at Leeds City Museum by January 8, 2023.

As part of the 18th edition of the Edinburgh Art Festival, a 90ft long inflatable sculpture of E.coli by Bristol-based Luke Jerram was suspended from the ceiling of the National Museum of Scotlandthe Grand Gallery. E.coli, which is 5 million times bigger than real bacteria, is on display for the first time in Scotland.

Funding

Funding for a new “digital museum” has been secured by the Trust which is currently developing Trent Park House in north London.
