Qatar museums announce activities for December

* Community invited to register for workshops, tours and live demonstrations

Qatar Museums launched several events and activities throughout the month of December at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), the Qatar National Museum (NMoQ) and the fire station. The MIA will organize a Square Kufic workshop on December 22 and 29, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The name comes from the use of black squares as the unit of measurement for letters. Check out the different designs of the square kufic including square, rectangle, circle, star, swirl, and more.
The Monoprint workshop for adults takes place on December 22, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants will create their own unique monoprint using different ink and layering techniques. More information is available by email at [email protected]

Planet Kids Online on December 28, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., is a story time, discussion and monthly activity on the museum’s connection to protecting the planet. The NMoQ is organizing a hybrid conference on the poetry of Sheikh Jassem bin Mohammed bin Thani on December 11 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The conference will be held in Arabic with translation into English. Zoom link:
Live demonstration: International Aviation Day – NMoQ Baraha – December 7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. – On the occasion of International Civil Aviation Day, teams from the Civil Aviation Authority of Qatar and the Qatar Aeronautical Academy will host a live demonstration on aviation science and advanced mechanisms and technologies used in the fields of navigation, aviation safety and meteorology. Grandmother’s Hazawi between the past and the present – Mohammed bin Jassim Al Khulaifi Library at NMoQ – December 11 and 25, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. – Young readers aged 5 to 9 will enjoy reading the story “Hazawi Grandmother”, which aims to strengthen national identity and connect new generations to their heritage. Qatar Heritage and Sport at NMoQ – December 9 (Arabic), 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., December 5 and 12 (English), 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. During this guided tour, participants will learn about the natural environment and cultural heritage of Qatar and its relationship to different types of sports. Fire station: Artists in residence – Workshop “Figures of speech” by current artists in residence Amna al-Muftah and Sarah Jayyousi: Screen printing on tote bags – December 8 at Education Studio, Fire station, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Al-Muftah is a visual artist, drawing inspiration from nature and the things she sees in her daily life. In her practice, she makes pigments, dyes, and incorporates clay, fabric, and embroidery into her work. She holds a BFA in Painting and Engraving from VCUarts Qatar, 2020.
Jayyousi is a visual artist who paints, prints and photographs her surroundings from their abstract perspective. She is drawn to hard edges, contrasting colors, and perspective. She holds a BFA in Painting and Engraving from VCUarts Qatar, 2020.
This workshop is part of the cycle of public programs linked to the Virgil Abloh “Figures of Speech” exhibition at the Fire Station. Visit to register.
“Speech Figures” workshop by fashion designer Noor al-Kuwari: The 4-step guide to a collection – December 4, 10:30 am to 12 noon, Education studio, Fire station.
Participants will discover and experience the process of developing their collection. Al-Kuwari is the founder of NORKUI, a contemporary ready-to-wear brand. She holds a BA in Fashion Design from VCUarts Qatar and is currently Artist in Residence at the Fire Station.
