Local organizations team up to organize the “Community Baby Shower”

PINE BELT, Miss. (WDAM) – On Tuesday afternoon, new and expectant mothers in the Pine Belt were able to participate in the third annual community baby shower.

United Way of Southeast Mississippi has partnered with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Mississippi State University Extension Office, Mississippi State Department of Health, and Forrest County Board of Supervisors to host this educational event for women.

The women were also able to meet 12 information providers on topics such as car seat safety, CPR and early brain development.

“Infant and maternal mortality is a high risk factor for the state of Mississippi, so we wanted to provide new moms or moms-to-be with the ability to get information to ensure they have a healthy pregnancy. , healthy deliveries and healthy babies,” said Kari Lynn Somers, Community Impact Director for United Way of Southeast Mississippi. “At the end of the day, we want them to know that they may not learn everything they need to be a mom today, but you have a wealth of resources…”

Sponsored by Women and Children’s Services at Forrest General Hospital, mothers in attendance had the opportunity to take home a free car seat and gift bag.

Somers says she hopes this event will allow pregnant women in the Pine Belt not only to be better informed about infant safety, but also to know that there are many resources in the community to help them after pregnancy. .
