Reminder – Colby Exhibition

Colby Pond, Colby Road, The Colby Memorial Library. The name of one of Danville’s most important founding families is everywhere, but have you ever wondered who they are? A new installation at the library highlights Lester Colby and his family history with an astonishing collection of personal objects and photographs.

The Colby Memorial Library and the Danville Heritage Commission invite you to the library to view their exhibit celebrating Lester Colby, the library’s greatest benefactor. Visitors will be able to learn stories about the family and see many personal artifacts that were donated to the library by members of the Colby family and to the town of Danville by the Hawke Historical Society.

Items held by the Heritage Commission include a Colby family bible, Lester’s great-great-grandfather’s 1800s military canteen, crafts from Lester’s mother Lucy Spofford Colby, including a quilt and sewing bookmarks as well as photographs of the family farm and the mill. The library also has a detailed family history book compiled by descendants. Lester Colby’s replicated diary entries when he was 12 provide a rare glimpse into life in Danville in the 1870s.
